Hypermarket ordered closed for flouting food safety norms

AJMAN — A popular hypermarket in Ajman, Sun City, was ordered closed on Monday by the Ajman Municipality, according to a source in the municipality.

More than 200kg of meat unfit for human consumption was seized at Sun City hypermarket.

The Sun City, located in Ajman Industrial Area, was shut down for violation of food safety and hygiene standards.

Khaled Al Houseny, Director of Public Health and Food Central Laboratory in Ajman Municipality, told Khaleej Times that the hypermarket was ordered shut because it had ignored several warnings and fines.

The Al Hoot shopping centre was fined Dh20,000 for similar violations, he said and added that shopping centre's management had been ordered to rectify the situation, failing which the centre would face closure and cancellation of trade licence.

In Ajman, all the meat shops have refrigerators, but most of them don't preserve the meat at proper temperature, thus allowing the bacteria to set in.

"Since meat is very vulnerable to contamination, holds and containers must be clean and the meat stored in thoroughly hygienic condition. The transportation companies and meat shops are responsible for ensuring the sale of quality meat throughout the emirate," he asserted.
