A senior Congress leader and two-time member of parliament (MP) who contested the April 30 Lok Sabha elections from Jamnagar in Gujarat has sent shockwaves in political circles by conceding his defeat even before the results are out on May 16.

Vikram Madam (56) stunned journalists on Thursday when he told them that he had come to the conclusion after studying the mood of the voters that he would lose by 30,000 votes. “I am a realistic person and don’t believe in running away from reality,” he said.

Madam, who had won the Jamnagar seat in Saurshtra region in 2009 by more than 25,000 votes, is being challenged by his niece, Poonam Madam (34), who is a sitting Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Khambhaliya. In Wednesday’s polling statewide, the Jamnagar constituency in the Saurashtra region of the state had recorded a 57.42 per cent turnout, 5 per cent below the 62 per cent polling recorded in the state. The Congress had, therefore, considered Jamnagar as one of the eight ‘safer’ seats for the party from among the 26 seats in Gujarat.

BJP leader Jagdish Bhavsar told Khaleej Times that a saffron wave swept Jamnagar after chief minister and the party’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi addressed a rally in favour of its contestant Poonam Madam.
