Kerala police on Friday arrested a youth who cheated many people in the state and outside by impersonating as a relative of UAE-based Lulu Group Managing Director M.A Yusuf Ali.
Shiyas Hamza, 38, a native of Mathilakom in Yusuf Ali's home district of Trichur, had been impersonating as son, son-in-law and close relative of the NRI businessman, who has set up several business ventures in his home state.
He was taken into custody by a Kerala police team from a star hotel at Juhu in Mumbai. The team from Trivandrum rushed to Mumbai by flight on Thursday after a Malayali employee in the hotel alerted them about Shiyas' stay in the hotel and nabbed him.
The conman was brought to the state capital on Friday and is now being questioned at the Medical College police station in the city. Police officials said that the accused was not cooperating with the interrogation.
Shiyas, who used to lead a luxurious life, had reportedly approached many people in Trivandrum as a relative of Yusuf Ali for land for setting up Lulu Mall. Police said they would be able to give more details about the cheating cases only after interrogating him.
Shiyas was booked based on a complaint lodged by a manager of the businessman with the Intelligence Additional Director General of Police. He had also used the name of some other prominent people for cheating. - news@khaleejtimes
