India to Reintroduce Attestation of 
All Job Offer Letters from Abroad

DUBAI - In a move to ensure the protection of its citizens abroad, India will re-introduce mandatory attestation of job offer letters from overseas employers for all categories of workers.

Indian diplomatic missions in their respective countries will be assigned to carry out the attestation, a top official told Khaleej Times on Saturday.

Currently, India insists attestation of job offer letters to only domestic and blue-collar workers.

“India scrapped the rule of mandatory attestation for every job offer letter 15 years ago but we are planning to reintroduce it.

“When the rule comes into effect, the job offer letters would be verified and attested by Indian missions in respective countries,” said K. Mohandas, Secretary, Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA).

Mohandas said the ministry is developing an e-governance programme to speed up the attestation process.

“We scrapped the rule earlier because of delays but now the Indian missions will be ready for handling all the attestation work within stipulated time,” he said.

An exclusive community centre will be opened in Dubai or Abu Dhabi this month to coordinate the efforts to uplift the life of workers from India employed in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC) countries, he said.

“A special officer and supporting staff will be appointed in the centre which will work under the Indian embassy.” The centre will work for the welfare of blue-collar workers as well as others.

A reception was arranged for Mohandas by the Indian Consulate in Dubai at the residence of Consul-General Venu Rajamony.
