After fighting a two-month-long battle on a ventilator, Indian taxi driver Elias George will finally fly home in an air ambulance on Friday morning.
George had suffered a brain stroke on July 16 and was under the care of Cleveland Clinic in Abu Dhabi from the next day. The family wanted to move him back to his hometown of Kochi.
The hospital had recommended he travel back only in an air ambulance. On August 28, Khaleej Times had reported about the plight of the family struggling to foot the bill.
"A local company is helping with the funding. They have come as our saviour," Austine Bruze, his brother, said. The company wishes not to be named.
"We will depart from Abu Dhabi Bateen Executive Airport at 11 am. We will reach Cochin International airport by 4.30 pm," he said.
Bruce is grateful for the role played by Cleveland Clinic.
"It was only after the hospital was involved that we got the air ambulance for Dh130,000. Earlier, when George's company was involved they got a quotation for around Dh200,000," he added.
"The hospital even helped us with paperwork and insurance procedures," Bruze said.
Bruze will be travelling to Kochi in the air ambulance, which will have a doctor and another paramedic. George will be admitted to Medial Trust Hospital in Kochi.
"We will have an ambulance ready to take my brother to Medical Trust. Also, police will escort us to streamline the 30 km traffic," Bruze said.
"I and my family express our sincere thanks to your newspaper for the support. Please continue praying for safe repatriation and speedy recovery," he added.
