The Indian community in the UAE joined their counterparts back home in mourning E. Ahmed, a prominent Kerala politician who died in New Delhi on Wednesday morning. The seven-time MP from Kerala collapsed in the parliament while the House was in session on Tuesday.
The 78-year-old MP from Malappuram was a frequent visitor to Dubai. Ahmed, who lost his wife several years ago, used to spend much of his spare time with his daughter Dr Fauza Sherzad and son-in-law at their house in Dubai.
A parliamentarian for five decades, Ahmed had maintained good relations with the leadership and people of the UAE and other Gulf countries. Speaking to Khaleej Times, many local residents praised his historic role in strengthening India's diplomatic ties with the Gulf region.
Ahmed was also elected as member of legislative assembly (MLA) in the state for five times.
Several expatriate organisations, community and business leaders have expressed their condolences to the departed leader of Indian Union Muslim League. A parliamentarian for 26 years, he had served as minister of state for external affairs and represented India in the United Nations.
"It is with deep regret I heard about the sad demise of Janab E. Ahmed M.P, who was a family friend. He was a politician par excellence who served his party, community and country exceptionally well," said Dr Azad Moopen, managing director of Aster DM Healthcare.
M.A. Yousuf Ali, managing director, Emke Group of Companies, said: "E. Ahmed used to be a smart diplomat and leader who was always compassionate about expatriates. His death is a great loss to the expatriate community."
Ibrahim Ilayettil of the Kerala Muslim Community Centre said that special condolence meetings would be held in different parts of the UAE following his Friday funeral.
