India has a very vibrant higher education scene. With some of the best institutes and universities in Asia, the country has invested heavily in educational infrastructure, administration and delivery systems. It continues to be rated among the finest educational hubs in the region and around the globe. On India's Independence Day, Khaleej Times brings you a low-down on the country's top five colleges.
Commerce
Sri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi
 
Sri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) has been consistently ranked as India's foremost college, specialising in the commerce and economics streams. The college, affiliated to the Delhi University, offers undergraduate and post-graduate programmes like Bachelor of Commerce (Honours), Bachelor of Arts - Economics (Honours), Master of Commerce, Master of Arts - Economics and Post Graduate Diploma in Management. Founded in the 1930s, the college got its present name and form in 1951.

St Stephens College, New Delhi
 
One of the oldest and most prestigious colleges for arts and sciences in India, St Stephens is credited with producing a string of distinguished alumni. Founded in 1881, St Stephen's was initially affiliated to Calcutta University, then Punjab University and subsequently Delhi University. The various departments offering courses include Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, English, Economics, History, Political Science, Philosophy, Sanskrit, Hindi, Urdu and Persian. The college has an International Language School that teaches European and Asian languages.
 
 
Engineering
Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur
 
One of India's preeminent engineering colleges, the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) was established in 1959 with the assistance of a consortium of nine leading US research universities. IITK is currently among the top 50 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings Asia 2016. The college, reputed for its laboratories and testing facilities, offers B.Tech programmes in Aerospace Engineering, Biological Sciences and Bio-engineering, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering. With a campus spread over an area of more than 4.3 square kilometres, IITK has a state-of-the-art National Wind Tunnel Facility, Advanced Centre for Material Science, Advanced Centre for Electronic Systems, apart from its own airfield, flight-testing and gliding zones.
Medicine
All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi
 
Indubitably India's best medical college, All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi has been declared as an institution of national importance by an Act of the Indian Parliament. Established in 1956, the college and its adjoining multi-speciality hospital have nurtured excellence in all aspects of the healthcare. Accepting only 72 students annually based on the results of an all-India entrance examination for its undergraduate MBBS programme, the acceptance rate for admission to the medical school is 0.08 per cent - one of the toughest in the world. With research conducted in more than 40 disciplines, AIIMS offers courses in MBBS, B.Optom, MD, DM and M.Ch.

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore
 
Among the finest business schools, Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) is ranked number one in Asia-Pacific in terms of its faculty, learning techniques and resources. The college has a stellar reputation in areas such as research and professional practices, graduation outcomes, outreach and inclusivity. Founded in 1973, IIMB offers postgraduate, doctoral and executive training programmes. The Postgraduate Programme in Management (PGP), a two-year, full-time residential MBA is IIMB's flagship programme. The college offers consultant services, conducts seminars and academic conferences on a regular basis. Located in 100-acres of lush woods, IIM Bangalore has an extensive network of partner business schools worldwide.
