The system will enable patients to fix doctor’s appointments and follow-ups through SMS and emails. Officials said the system will reduce communication gaps between patients and doctors as well as avoid wastage of medicine.
Officials said that legislation was also being developed to protect patients. “Since patients records will be accessed by any authorised medical centre, legislation is being developed to prevent patient confidentiality,” said Minister of Health Dr Hanif Hassan.
The second phase of the Ministry of Health’s Health Information System, called Wareed, was launched last week at the emergency, registration and appointments section in Kuwait Hospital in Sharjah. The ministry has already installed the required infrastructure to operate the system in Al Qassimi Hospital in Sharjah and began training the employees of the hospital.
“This is a big challenge for us since we have 800 employees to be trained,” said Aref Noryani, Director of Al Qassimi Hospital. He expressed hope that the system would have a dramatic effect in overcoming communication challenges. “Up to 70-75 per cent of complaints in hospitals are due to the communication gap between doctors and patients,” he said.
Dr Noryani also said the system would reduce medicine wastage and prevent duplication of patient records.
The system is already operational in Shaikh Khalifa Hospital and Mushairaf Health Centre in Ajman where 134,627 patient records have been set up.
“The prior appointment service in the system will help the hospitals to end the long waiting hours that people endure to see a doctor,” said Khalid Majid Lootah, Assistant Undersecretary for Supporting and Institutional Services at the ministry.
Mohammed Nabeel Al Douwy, Director of Wareed project, said a hospital would be connected every three months to link all 15 hospitals and 68 clinics in Dubai, Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah, Umm Al Quwain, Fujairah and Ajman by 2012.
