Integrated waste management plan for Ramadan

The work schedule at the Jebel Ali hazardous waste treatment plant will be done in two shifts

 
Dubai Municipality's Waste Management Department has drawn an integrated waste management plan for the Holy Month of Ramadan.
The plan will contain a number of programmes and technical work plans focused on intensifying supervision and field efforts, public awareness programmes, increasing the sweeping equipment, road cleanliness, boat cleaning, creek and water channels cleaning, and emergency field teams on highways and residential areas.
Abdulmajeed Sifai, Director of Waste Management Department at Dubai Municipality, said they pay particular attention to the work plan in Ramadan because of the increased consumption this month.
"The quantity and variety of food waste increases during Ramadan compared to the rest of the year. It necessitates the provision of increased means of storage and more workers as well as supervisory and emergency teams to deal with the calls we receive from the public and to organise service vehicles around the clock in all areas," he said.
"We have provided all means and equipment to the field teams, which will cover the entire emirate through four round-the-clock shifts. We have distributed 148 waste containers and 70 additional garbage baskets near mosques and places of Ramadan events and Iftar tents. In addition, we have formed a team, with a "special shift" of 70 cleaners to work from 11 am to 5 pm," said Sifai.
"Our plan of action also includes the launch of the Smart Shopping Initiative, which aims to educate shoppers on the importance of smart shopping, to reduce household waste, and use environmentally friendly waste bags," he said. 
"In addition to that, the waste disposal site at Al Qusais will be open 24 hours every day. The Al Bayada dump, which was allocated for construction waste, will be open from 5 am to 5 pm and from 9 pm to 3 am on a daily basis. The Habbab/Warsan dumps will be under service from 5 am to 11 am throughout the month of Ramadan," said Sifai.
He said the work schedule at the Jebel Ali hazardous waste treatment plant will be done in two shifts: the morning shift from 7 am to 12 pm and the waste shall be received before 11:30 am, and the evening shift from 12 pm to 5 pm, to retrieve medical waste and liquid and hazardous waste tanks at a pre-determined time.
