ABU DHABI — The Al Salam Street-Al Falah Street intersection will be closed from Thursday midnight, the Abu Dhabi Municipality announced.
The outbound lanes of the Eastern Ring Road will be moved so that they will be in parallel with the pathway going towards the naval base area, with three lanes on each direction.
This move will pave the way for the construction of the main tunnel along Al Salam Street that measures 3.1km in length and begins after the Sea Palace running through the city down to the Mina area.
The closure will pave way for the Municipality to complete the project by the end of 2010, including the gradual opening of tunnels and surface roads.
The municipality advises motorists affected by the closure to use local area roads. Those coming from outside Abu Dhabi going towards the city centre are encouraged to use alternative routes such as Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Street and Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street to avoid congestion.
Pedestrians are urged to use proper crossing areas and bridges provided by the municipality for their own safety.
The Al Salam Street Project is a result of the cooperation between the Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, Urban Planning Council, Department of Transport and the General Command of Abu Dhabi Police.
