‘Cancer Care’ is a unique follow-up application for cancer patients who can maintain contact with their doctors without having to visit hospitals for every consultation. Doctors will be available round-the-clock to reply to patient queries and offer advice.

The project is specifically for patients who have already started cancer treatment and require follow-up care. The application that was launched at the Arab Health Congress opened on Monday can soon be accessed via the ministry’s web portal. “The application also provides information about cancer,” said Khalid Majid Lootah, Assistant Undersecretary for Institutional and Supporting Services at the ministry.

He also said that doctors can view patients’ medication and treatment plan. “Patients can inform the doctor of any symptoms in-between the visits, view doctor’s suggested appointments and approvals and also join support groups for cancer patients in the UAE,” he added.

Dr Huda Al Suweidi, Director of Statistics and Health Research Centre at the ministry, said the cancer registry of 2007 is being revived. “We are collaborating with Tawam Hospital to create a registry for the Northern Emirates and Abu Dhabi,” she said while speaking to Khaleej Times. The registry will be operational by next month, she added. “A cancer registry is different from other registries since it usually takes four to six months to register the patients,” she explained.

Plans are also afoot to establish a GCC-wide cancer registry. Once established, the registry will make available vital data that can be used to assess current trends in cancer diagnosis and treatment, and which will help researchers and doctors in their work to develop new treatments for cancer and provide better preventive education.

“The registry will contain information such as the age and gender of those diagnosed per year, geographical prevalence, relative frequencies of each type of cancer and the number of deaths per year from cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancers among females in the UAE while colorectal cancer is among the top common cancers in men.
