Islamabad: Justice Anwar Zaheer Jamali was sworn as the 24th Chief Justice of Pakistan on Thursday, following the retirement of Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja.
President Mamnoon Hussain administered the oath on Justice Jamali in a solemn ceremony at the President House in Islamabad. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif also attended.
In May 1998, Justice Jamali was appointed as judge of the Sindh High Court and reappointed as judge and Chief Justice of High Court of Sindh in August 2008. He had earlier declined to take oath under the Provisional Constitution Order (PCO) promulgated by military Ruler Gen. Pervez Musharraf in 2007 after dismissing 64 judges and imposing emergency.
A year later, Justice Jamali was appointed as the Supreme Court judge and was also nominated as the acting chief of the Election Commission of Pakistan in July 2014.
Earlier, the outgoing chief justice of Pakistan, Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja, called for an alternative judicial system in order to redress the grievances of the poor. He urged judges to administer justice fearlessly.
