In the media spotlight since his surgery, Nabeel, according to his mother, was thrilled to be promoted to Grade 7 in the Dubai-based Oxford School.
“Though he has not attended school for the past three months due to his sensitive health condition, the school has promoted him, based on the results of the first term,” says his mother, Sofia. “He did pretty well in those exams before he was hospitalised.
A kidney transplant was carried out on Nabeel on February 29 by a team of doctors at Al Qasimi Hospital. He suffered from a genetic disorder that affected his kidney function.
“Though I have not allowed any of his friends to meet him while he was recuperating after his operation at home, they have been in constant touch over the phone,” she explained.
“He is very excited to attend today’s graduation ceremony as he will be meeting his friends after a long time,” said Sofia.
Nabeel’s great-aunt donated her kidney to save his life in a pre-emptive transplant, just before he was to be put on dialysis.
His parents have already cancelled their plans for a vacation this year as Nabeel should not be exposed to polluted air. “He still has to visit the doctor at least twice a week. Besides, he needs complete rest for three months,” she said, adding that Nabeel would attend school normally starting September.
Dr Mustafa Ahmed Al Kazim, transplant nephrologist and Head of Renal Services at Welcare Hospital and Nabeel’s doctor, is thrilled at Nabeel’s progress. “He is a courageous boy as he agreed to undergo this crucial operation,” he said, adding that Nabeel does not require isolation anymore.
“Successful cases such as Nabeel’s prove that such patients do not require to travel abroad for transplants since it is available in the UAE now,” said the doctor.
