King Faisal Bridge is all set for demolition

SHARJAH — Close on the heels of completion of Al Kholafa Al Rashedeen intersection, work on putting up a cloverleaf intersection replacing the King Faisal Bridge has begun.

The contractor has already embarked on laying alternative roads to be used by motorists, following the verification of the plans by the Sharjah Traffic and Transport Committee.

The existing King Faisal Bridge is slated for demolition in December, and the alternative roads are expected to be in place by mid-November. Efforts are also on to ensure that traffic diversions planned do not affect vehicular movement.

The committee conducted a study on the alternative roads that will be constructed on one of the busiest roads in Sharjah, witnessing traffic jams daily. They also visited the site of the alternative road, which will begin, from Al Wahda Street. Engineer Khawla Al Nouman, Director-General of the Sharjah Directorate of Public Works and member of the executive council, told Khaleej Times: "The existing King Faisal bridge will be demolished and will be replaced by a Dh43 million clover leaf interchange comprising three lanes in each direction."

"We have already obtained the no objection certificates from various Sharjah departments to ensure that the project does not affect their network. We will start work on the new intersection after completing necessary adjustments to the Kholafa Al Rashedeen intersection, including the addition of a second lane to ease traffic coming from Dubai and headed towards Al Khan," Eng. Khawla said, adding the official inauguration of Kholafa Al Rashedeen intersection was scheduled for the month-end.
