The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has decided to list facts and figures about how much carbon emissions each customer’s monthly energy usage generates in their utility bills.
The move is part of a Carbon Footprint Campaign launched by the Dewa to support the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative to foster sustainable living across the emirate.
Rising energy consumption is one of the leading causes of carbon emissions, which causes damage to the planet by increasing global temperatures and causing sea levels to rise.
Reflecting Dewa’s strategy to reduce carbon emissions and conserve natural resources, this new campaign seeks to raise awareness towards responsible energy consumption, while encouraging best possible environmental practices and reducing carbon emissions, the department said.
The campaign aimed at encouraging consumers to reduce their carbon footprint in line with the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, to reduce demand for energy by 30 per cent by 2030.
Dewa said it was encouraging its customers to reduce electricity consumption, and use green products, such as energy-efficient light bulbs and eco-friendly appliances.
Dr. Maneesha Phadnis, who lives in a villa in Silicon Oasis, welcomed the move. “This way, people will be aware and alert about what they are doing to impact the environment. And it is important to do so.”
“Ever since we moved to this villa, we have tried our best to reduce our electricity and water consumption by adopting various measures. However, I will be glad to see the carbon emissions we contribute to. We will take it as a challenge every month to reduce our energy consumption even further,” she said.
Dewa chief executive Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer said the Carbon Footprint campaign was “vital” to the reduction of carbon emissions.
“By educating our customers on responsible electricity consumption (we are) contributing to a brighter, greener future.”
Conservation and environmental protection have become a core part of Dewa’s corporate culture, the authority said.
