Labour Office orders closure of 14 firms

AL AIN — The Inspection Department in Al Ain Labour Office (AALO) has ordered the closure of 14 companies for violating the Ministry of Labour’s rules and regulations.

It also cancelled 152 work visas last month.

The head of the Inspection Department, Ahmed Abdullah, said the department carried out raids on 1,763 companies, establishments and firms.

“In addition, the AALO inspected 47 offices that sponsor housemaids and domestic helpers to ensure compliance of rules,” he said, adding that the AALO investigated complaints lodged by six workers against their companies.

“The office warned and fined two firms in Al Ain during November,” he added.

In November, the labour inspectors visited 122 factories, 10 small industry shops and 21 labour camps. The visits aimed at ensuring best work environment, accommodation and payment of wages and other remuneration on time.

Earlier in August this year, the Ministry of Labour (MoL) had specified conditions laid in Article No. 104 of the Labour Law regarding labour housing. According to rules, the employer or the sponsor must provide six major facilities to the workers — transportation, decent accommodation, drinking water, meals, first-aid facility and recreation centre.

In addition, the accommodations should also have fire alarms, kitchens, emergency exits, housekeeping facility, he said.
