A laptop on IndiGo's Thiruvananthapuram-Bengaluru flight caught fire and the airline crew had to spray fire extinguishers. The incident came to light after passengers reported burning smell from a black bag and notified the crew staff who discovered minor sparks coming from the hat-rack. Passengers seated in nearby seats were relocated and placed the laptop in a container filled with water till the plane landed safely.
An Indigo spokesperson was quoted saying in The Times of India, "The crew operating flight 6E-445 from Thiruvananthapuram to Bengaluru noticed the smoke smell in the cabin and immediately informed the pilot-in-command. The cabin crew on priority relocated all passengers from adjacent seats. The aircraft made a normal landing at Bengaluru airport, all passengers were deplaned as per normal procedure and the airport authorities were informed." The airline also thanked all the passengers for cooperating with the crew onboard.
Last month, a mobile phone caught fire mid-air on Delhi-Indore flights of another airline. With more such incidents happening, International aviation agencies have started considering banning big PEDs from check-in bags because of fears that their battery fire would go undetected, leading to possible catastrophes.
