Major-General Mohammed Saif Al Zafeen, assistant commander-in-chief of operations affairs for the Dubai Police, said the traffic department cancelled licences of 24 heavy truck drivers last year. While 1,628 licences have been confiscated, 677 more are wanted for confiscation.

He noted that trucks are confiscated if they cross the red signal, and the driver's licence will be cancelled and the driver deported. Major-Gen Zafeen explained that the two major reasons for cancellation of the 24 licences are accumulation of traffic points and driving under the influence of alcohol.

One of the odd excuses given by a motorist for committing speeding irregularities is that the driver had to reach on time for his father's funeral. The driver, who was caught by the radar seven times this month, requested the police to waive off the fines. However, the police did not heed to his request because the man could not prove that the over-speeding coincided with the time of the funeral.

Major-Gen Zafeen said another driver committed six radar violations in 30 minutes and tried to excuse himself by saying that he had to take his wife to the hospital. However, he also could not provide proof that he accompanied his wife to a hospital.
