Assila Al Muala, Head of the Public Health Department at the municipality, said the facilities were inspected on the direction of Mohammed Saif Al Afakham, Director-General of the municipality, following complaints from residents.

Atef Abdel-Aziz, Head of the Licensing Department, said 10 such centres were operating in the city. Inspections by the Public Health Department confirmed that three of them were not committed to the health regulations, particularly those regarding the rooms where clients were given massage. Bathrooms lacked in cleanliness.

He said the municipal chief has instructed to show zero tolerance to flouting of health and hygiene regulations. The three massage centres were warned several times and their activities suspended earlier.

Any massage centre seeking a licence from the municipality will have to get permits from the police and the medical zone, Abdel-Aziz said. The centre must detail its activities and whether it is men or women.
