Listening to reason on issue of old cars

Khaleej Times wrote in this column on June 17 requesting officials of the Dubai Traffic Department and the Dubai Transport Corporation to review the decision that bans registration of pre-2000 car models. The sudden decision did not give an ample grace period to businessmen and motorists to adjust with it. Imagine the heavy losses car dealers would incur had the order been enforced. Many car showrooms have struck multi-million dirham deals and there are consignments of vehicles on their way to other car showrooms.

So, hats off to the Dubai Traffic Department and the Dubai Transport Corporation for their response after listening to the voice of reason on the basis of the fact that any decision, whatever it is in favour of public interest, must leave as few side-effects as possible. Of course, it goes without saying that technical testing of motor vehicles is absolutely necessary for it is designed to conserve and maintain the environment.
