An official from the civic body told Khaleej Times that UAE nationals in Al Qoua, Sowaihan, Al Khazna and El Showaib have already received their new houses.

However, the official added, the civic body has decided to enforce a law that prevents locals from renting out their houses obtained under government schemes.

“The municipality has enforced the law and residents have vacated the houses that are not used by their owners,” he said.

The government is also planning to replace about 2,500 old houses with modern ones.

According to the source, there are other expansion projects of the government including the construction of 1,200 new villas in Northern and Southern Al Yaher.

He added that in the Al Salamat area, 1,300 villas will be constructed.

The projects are expected to be completed by December 2009.
