Man gets life term for drug trafficking

FUJAIRAH — The Fujairah Court of Appeal upheld a verdict issued by the lower court which had sentenced a GCC national to life term for drug trafficking charges.

The defendant had confessed to entering the country illegally and possessing drugs. He said he was under the influence of alcohol at the time.

As per the court records, the man was held by the police while he was entering the country from a land border check-post.

The police noticed his intoxicated state and when they searched him, they found ‘hashish’ in his possession. He was arrested and referred to the Public Prosecution, which charged him with drug trafficking and substance abuse.

The defendant argued in the Court of First Instance that he didn’t intend to enter the UAE and that he did so only under the influence of alcohol, so it was an unintended crime.

The defendant contested this verdict and filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal, which rejected his petition and upheld the verdict issued by the Court of First Instance.
