According to court records, investigations conducted by an Interior Ministry officer showed that Meeran Shah had a quantity of marijuana. An undercover agent struck a deal with the defendant to buy the drug for Dh2,000.

The Court of First Instance modified the charges of possession and trading to personal use of narcotics, and gave the defendant a 15-year jail term and Dh50,000 fine. The Court of Appeal reduced the term to 10 years, but Meeran appealed, claiming the documents of the case had no legal evidence and had contradictory eyewitness accounts. He also claimed that the money that was handed over to him by the undercover agent was a debt. The arguments did not convince the Supreme Federal Court.
