'Media plays vital role in Arab world'

DUBAI — Media plays an important role in the Arab world, shaping the cultural, social and political developments in the region, said Prince Khaled Al Faisal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Chairman of the Arab Thought Foundation during the Arab and world Media Forum which is being held in Dubai.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, he added that the media boom in the Arab world today has given a boost to Arab culture. It also brings about positive changes in a culture struggling cope with modern technology.

But the world media boom in general has also resulted in massive Westernisation at the cost of the indigenous culture. At the same time, the profusion in Arab satellite channels has not had any impact on the West, he pointed out. He hoped that Arab media would do its best in removing misconceptions about Arab Islamic culture.

Media is a great tool which could be used to discover the truth of political , economic and social conflicts, and it can create the space for dialogue, Prince Khalid suggested.
