Eighteen-year-old Yara Ibrahim Al Namla became the first person to represent Saudi women in its National Day celebrations at Jeddah's Al Jawhara Stadium.

The Saudi national took part in an operatta at the stadium, Al Arabia reports.

Al Namla, a student of architecture at Prince Sultan University, said she was nominated by the operetta's director Munir Al Qahtani and was finally chosen by the chairman of Saudi Arabia's General Authority for Entertainment Ahmed Al Khatib.

She was selected according to features representing the successful enlightened Saudi woman "who has a common role with her male compatriot in establishing the achievement and keeping pace with the development".

She said that the team trained for eight hours per day for a whole week.
