Metro model a big draw

DUBAI — As many as 145,000 people visited the Roads and Transport Authority’s pavilion in the Global Village during the last two weeks since the opening of the village to see the mock up of one Dubai Metro carriage which is approximately 18 metres in length, three metres wide and four metres high.

Engineer Abdul Majid al Khaja, CEO of the Rail Agency in the authority said that the Dubai Metro mock up in the Global Village attracts a large number of visitors from different nationalities and ages.

He added: “To cater to the needs of the visitors, an enthusiastic and vibrant group of volunteers who are also employees of RTA have taken time out and work round the clock educating people on the RTA in general and on the Dubai Metro as well.

The Red Line is expected to be completed in September 9, 2009 and the Green Line to be completed in March 2010.”

Being one of the main attractions this year, the mock-up drew in on an average 80,000 visitors alone on Eid Al Adha, Al Khaja said.

The Metro consists of five carriages for approximately 640 people on two levels. The first Gold Class is at the front of Metro and includes 18 deluxe seats. The total area allocated for women and children include 15 seats in addition to areas for kids trolleys, bags and luggage.

The second Silver class includes four carriages with 109 seats and also allocates seats and areas for people with special needs. Al Khaja said that the Japanese company manufacturing the Metro will start work in February 2007 and the first carriage will reach Dubai in March 2008.

The pavilion also features other attractions like a touch screen that showcases the time taken to reach one station to the other on the Red Line, kiosks of the RTA and the Dubai Metro.
