Speaking to Khaleej Times, several people visiting the Al Naif area in Deira, Dubai, said that due to the absence of clear markings on the roadside parking meant for the handicapped, they were forced to dish out hefty fines when they parked their car on the Al Burj Street.

A nearby shopkeeper said, “Though there is a signboard clearly showing that the parking is reserved for the handicapped, there are no clear markings on the road — as is the norm. Due to this, we have observed that on several occasions, motorists rushing about for their work, ignore the sign, and think that the parking is open for all.” “As expected, as soon as they leave their car, they are fined huge amounts which they do not expect,” he added.

A.H., a businessman who had been fined Dh500 for parking on the same space, said, “The Dubai Municipality should take note of this irregularity and make the markings clear so that rushing motorists can clearly make out that the space has been reserved for the handicapped and avoid the fine.”

Another person who had also been fined the same amount due to overlooking the signboard said, “I admit it was a mistake to overlook the sign, but the road markings should have been so clear that the motorists could not have missed them.”
