Reacting to complaints lodged by parents against the hike in tuition fee by the Dubai International School and Westminster School within two consecutive years as reported earlier, Juma Al Salami, Assistant Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Education for Private Education, said that the two schools had submitted applications requesting for the approval of increase in their tuition fee three years ago.
The ministry’s competent committee had okayed the requests, but the sanction of the Minister of Education was delayed for more than seven months. This, he said, had prompted the schools to apply for the increase after a full academic year, commencing from the date of submitting the application and approval of the committee.
Al Salami did not comment when asked why the rise in tuition fee should be enforced after being sanctioned by the minister, but not approved by the committee. He said the committee had rejected the rise in tuition fee for 19 schools — 2 in Dubai, 5 in Sharjah, 2 in Ras Al Khaimah, 6 in Abu Dhabi, 2 in Ajman, and one school each in Fujairah and Al Ain.
He said rejection was due to the fact that the applicants did not acquire the required standard, which varied from 60 per cent to 70 per cent. He also added that some schools had sent in their applications late.
Official sources in the private sector departments said the increase in the tuition fee at the Westminster School, which will be enforced from the beginning of the next academic year was preceded by a rise last year, and was made with retrospective effect from the time of submitting the application.
