More foot bridges on way in Sharjah

SHARJAH - Foot bridges and underpasses on Al Itihad Road, as well as roads near public gardens, shopping malls, hospitals and medical centres and mosques in Sharjah will be constructed by the Sharjah Municipality as part of a major plan to build new foot overpasses and subways at several areas in the emirate, according to Sultan Al Moala, Head of the Engineering Section at the Sharjah Municipality.

In an exclusive interview with Khaleej Times, Mr Al Moala said that the civic body's plan includes constructing subways for pedestrians at Al Mobarak Centre (between Qurtoba and Al Khaleej Al Arabi bridges) on Al Oruba Road, and at the Sharjah Co-op and the Shaikh Rashid bin Mohammad Al Qasimi Mosque (between Al Khalidiya and Al Khan bridges).

"The municipality will also construct pedestrian crossings at various roads in accordance with the findings of studies conducted by the civic body to monitor the future urban and residential development at different areas in the emirate," he pointed out, adding that the municipality would also pave roads with interlock bricks and instal traffic lights to protect pedestrians from reckless motorists.

"Several standards will be taken into account by the civic body on designing these crossings. The municipality is collecting data to specify the roads on which pedestrian passes should be constructed," Mr Al Moala said.

"After the completion of the database, the municipality will construct several overpasses and subways to ensure safety of pedestrians at roads and highways in the city," he said, adding that most of the new pedestrian foot bridges and underpasses would be mainly constructed at crowded areas in Sharjah.
