DUBAI — The number of pedestrians arrested for crossing the road at prohibited areas is still alarming.

And, around 30 per cent of the pedestrians arrested by the Dubai Police during the last six months are illegal residents in the UAE, according to a study conducted by General Department of Traffic of the Dubai Police.

Speaking to Khaleej Times, Brigadier Mohammed Saif Al Zafin, Director General of Traffic Department said: “Forty per cent of the deaths which took place in Dubai were caused by hit-and-run accidents. The number of people who were killed in hit-and-run accidents during the last nine months reached 77, compared to 89 in the year 2007, for the same period.

Al Zafin explained that during the last nine months the traffic police have caught 2,256 pedestrians who crossed roads from non-designated areas.

Acting Director of Diera Department Dubai Police, Major Hamood Saeed Al Amiri said: In just three days from September 16 to 18, the traffic police arrested 129 pedestrians for crossing the road wrongly.” 
He pointed out that 11 of them were referred to the Dubai Public Prosecution for endangering life.

The pedestrians caught were from the Al Aweer (48) Abu Bakar Al Siddique (32) and Emirates (32) roads while nine were from other roads.
