Zakiya Sultana Siddiqui, an Indian national has alleged that her delivery was induced but she was left on her own to deliver despite calling out to doctors in pain several times during the course of the event. “By the time the medical staff attended to my cries, I had already delivered a baby boy,” claimed Zakiya.

“It was happening very fast,” said Zakiya while speaking to Khaleej Times. “And despite the fact that I was crying out in pain and calling for help telling them that the contractions were coming in quick succession, no one paid any attention,” she said while narrating her experience.

At 11pm on May 20, Zakiya, as instructed by her gynaecologist, went to Gulf Medical College (GMC) hospital to undergo a normal but induced delivery since the baby was overdue.

After being administered medicine, Zakiya was asked to wait for the pains in a room adjacent to the delivery suite, she explained. By 5.30am, the pains were severe and by 6.10am on May 21 she had delivered her third child in the same room, she claimed.

“My sister-in-law and mom-in-law were beside me while I was calling for help. They too kept asking the nurses on duty to pay attention to me,” explained Zakiya. “But the staff kept on saying there is still time.” “After I had delivered, I just gestured to my relatives that the baby had been born, it was only then the staff came in rushing and took charge,” she said adding that even then the nurse was more concerned on how my in-laws managed to get in the room with me.

Zakiya, who has two other girls and has paid Dh3,500 for the delivery package, also said that the gynaecologist who had been attending to her during her antenatal was not present during the delivery. “I was told time and again by the staff on duty that they could not be with me the entire time and that I should stop complaining.”

The hospital management refutes Zakiya’s claims saying that there was no proof to substantiate the allegations. It, however, accepts that consultant doctors cannot sit with the patients since they are busy seeing other patients.

In a statement issued to Khaleej Times, GMC said, “From the evidences gathered from the patient’s file and interrogation of concerned medical staff, there is no proof to substantiate the allegations found in the complaint and the delivery was conducted by a specialist doctor.”

“It is true that the consultant doctors cannot sit with all the labouring patients since they are busy seeing other patients in the clinic and also performing operative procedures and for this reason, the labour and delivery area is always manned by an exclusive and dedicated team of qualified and experienced medical personnel,” read the statement.
