John. A. McCarthy, Executive Manager, Operation, Critical National Infrastructure Authority, told Khaleej Times on Tuesday that this would ensure safety of the country from any security threat.

The move follows regional political developments and threats from terrorists, the security official said.

This will be in addition to the existing infrastructure security in offshore and onshore oil and gas fields, power plants and water desalination plants in the UAE.

McCarthy, however, did not elaborate how this infrastructure security works.

“Safeguarding the essential resources of the country is vital. The UAE is located in a sensitive region and civilian targets have been attacked in GCC countries like Saudi Arabia. So, it’s important to build critical infrastructure security,” said McCarthy. He said that over 3,500 officers are currently working to ensure infrastructure security and latest technologies were in place, especially in the offshore oil and gas fields. “The task to set up security for infrastructure is a big task,” he added.
