Mumbai: A Suburban train derailed between Andheri and Vile Parle stations on Tuesday morning, inconveniencing hundreds of thousands of passengers. No one was injured in the accident.
This is the second derailment to have happened in as many days in Mumbai. On Monday night, a suburban trained derailed near CST, disrupting peak hour traffic.
The railways have ordered a probe into both the incidents. Mumbai's suburban railways are the city's lifeline, carrying more than 6.5 million passengers daily along three corridors - Western, Central and Harbour.
Even minor disruptions can cause chaos during the rush hours as hundreds of thousands of passengers get stranded.
On Tuesday, seven coaches of a Churchgate-bound local derailed between Andheri and Vile Parle stations. Passengers had to jump down from the train and walk all the way to the nearest station. The derailment threw both suburban and mainline services out of gear for several hours.
