The civic body has issued a list of new guidelines and tips and has ordered building managements to periodically clean and disinfect water tanks and coolers by approved companies.

This is being done as part of a clean drinking water awareness campaign launched on World Water Day which had the theme “Clean Water for a Healthy World.”

“We have already issued a list of approved companies who are authorised for cleaning and disinfecting water tanks and coolers.

Buildings can make use of their service to maintain their tanks in good condition in compliance with our requirements,” said Director of Food Control Department Khalid Mohammed Sharif Al Awadhi.

Municipal inspectors will conduct inspections of the tanks to assure compliance with construction and health safety requirements.

They would be collecting water samples for lab tests.

The new guidelines stipulate that samples should be taken periodically from different types of water tanks and taps in addition to the samples from the water sources (the public network or wells).

Guidelines include specifications for the site of the tanks, their designs with proper insulation and ventilation, installation procedures, management of undisrupted water flow by proper use of overhead, ground level or underground tanks, use of floating valve, prevention of water leakage and provisions for a source of light in compliance with the safety requirements of the Civil Defence Department for use within public tanks.
