DUBAI — Pakistani popular folk singers Sanam Marvi and Shaukat Ali performed at a concert organised by the Pakistan Consulate Dubai on Friday to celebrate their country’s National Day at the H.H. Shaikh Rashid Al Maktoum Pakistan School in Dubai.
The event was attended by Pakistan Consul-General Tariq Iqbal Soomro, his wife Maria, diplomats from other countries and prominent community members.
Sanam Marvi presented folk songs, ghazals and Sufi verses, including those of Baba Bulleh Shah. The 25-year-old singer ranks among the finest performers in Sufi, folk and ghazal genres. She does Sufi concerts in Pakistan and abroad and became popular after her performance in Coke Studio, a Pakistani television series. Sanam performed at the Times of India Aman ki Asha with Indian playback singer Rekha Bhardwaj last year. Shaukat Ali began his performance with verses of poet and philosopher Dr Mohammad Iqbal and presented national songs, folk songs, popular songs and poems.
Soomro and Maria also awarded the winning students of competitions organised by the school on March 22 as part of the celebrations. Students of various Pakistani schools took part in the competition.
