Islamabad: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has ordered the private schools not to raise fees for the year 2015. In Sindh, however, the government allowed private schools to raise by up to 10 per cent. The decision was taken after provincial education minister Nisar Khuhro negotiated with owners of private schools in Karachi.
The minister said that the owners had originally increased fee by 60 per cent.
Sharif has directed the Ministry of Education and Capital Administration and Development Division (CADD) to implement this decision during 2015 in letter and spirit, announced the PM House on late Sunday evening.
Interestingly, the private schools suddenly enhanced their fees to the extent which was not acceptable to students and their parents. It created commotion and now prime minister had to intervene. It has not been made clear whether the directive of the prime minister would be implemented throughout the country or it would be enforced in the federal capital alone since the CADD's jurisdiction is confined to Islamabad and the areas under the domain of the federal government.
The premier has also directed the Ministry of Education and CADD to hold consultative meetings with all stakeholders in order to devise a unanimously-acceptable policy of raise in fees in private schools.
The prime minister directed the authorities concerned to work out legislation in order to regulate the private schools to keep a check on profiteering by them.
They have been asked to come up with their proposals in this regard, the PM House announcement added.
