Nepalese expats mark Teej festival

DUBAI - The Nepalese Society in the UAE organised celebrations in Bur Dubai yesterday to mark the Teej festival. Pomp and gaiety, folk music and dance, and red-coloured attires marked the festival.

The celebrations were attended by over 500 members of the Nepalese expatriate community, who arrived at the venue from across the UAE.

The two-day festival of Teej is mainly celebrated by women. "The response from the community as far as participation is concerned has been exceptional. We have some six groups, each comprising three to four members, competing today, while the number of individuals is also encouraging," Chandra Prasad Sapkota, President of the Society, said.

The celebrations also included dance and musical competitions for groups and individuals, and saw the participation of local Nepalese music bands.

The celebrations began at 2pm and continued till late in the evening. It concluded with a dinner comprising Indian and Nepalese cuisines.

Mr Sapkota expressed happiness about the response from the Nepalese expatriate community, and lauded the efforts of the members of the Nepalese Society, including Dil G. C., Manbahadoor Thapa, Khem Bhurtek and Jai Prasad Sapkota.
