RAS AL KHAIMAH - The Ras Al Khaimah Municipality has opened a new abattoir with a capacity to slaughter 200 sheep and goats, and 15 cows and camels per hour in preparation of the Eid Al Adha season. The old abattoir, however, will remain operative during the feast days, according to a senior official at the municipality.

Dr Majid Al Dusuki, Head of the Veterinary Section at the municipality, said the new 4,200-square metre slaughter house located near the Sheep Market at the Fliya area was opened before the schedule. “The early opening of the abattoir is meant to give the butchers and personnel concerned enough time to train on the new tools, equipment and technology provided there,” he added.

“The new abattoir is equipped with big chillers to contain the expected large amounts of cattle during the Eid Al Adha, weddings and other occasions, as well as the increasing orders from butchers, malls, shopping centres and supermarkets. Apart from the rest areas, the new facility comprises special areas for sterilisation and four rooms attached to the two slaughtering halls for further services.”

Dr Dusuki said the four rooms attached to the slaughtering units are for preparing leather, killing ill and unfit animals, getting rid of slaughtering wastes and cutting meat. “The six counters dedicated for cutting meat in the new abattoir were unavailable in the old slaughter house,” he added. The new facility also contains special areas – locally known as Shabrat, for receiving and checking the live animals. “The abattoir has several parking lots, and is equipped with special trolleys for shifting the meat to the customers’ cars,” he said, noting that there is also a platform for loading meat in large quantities.
