The Consumer Materials Laboratory Section of the Dubai Central Laboratory (DCL) in Dubai Municipality has launched a range of new services in the field of pearl testing through the use of X-rays and a technique called REAL-TIME X-Ray in which the internal structure of the pearl can be identified without causing any damage and determine whether the pearl is natural or artificial.
Eng. Amin Ahmed, Head of Consumer Materials Laboratory Section said that the DCL always seeks to enhance the testing process and increase the accuracy of the results issued in line with the expectations and goals of the government.
"Using this technique has significantly reduced the time required for examination. In fact, this technique is 30 times faster than the old way, which depends on preparing and processing films," he said.
"The new technique is characterized by a very high accuracy and produces two and three-dimensional images of the pearl. Moreover, using this technique has been a shift from the traditional methods that rely on the use of chemicals to the environment-friendly ways that do not result in any chemical waste," said Ahmed.
"The provision of modern technical possibilities is a necessary requirement in light of the development happening in the field of pearl manufacturing. To fulfill this requirement, we must keep pace with the  development by providing highly accurate techniques that contribute to the enhancement of testing process and the scientific research works related to it," said Ahmed, who reiterated the keenness of DCL on consumer protection and achieving their happiness.
"DCL seeks to provide the best services to its customers around the world by the optimal utilization of specialized technical cadres for developing the test methods and by acquiring the best practices and the development in scientific research. Using the latest technology will help us enhance the quality and safety standards, which in turn will enable us achieve our strategic goal of "ensuring healthy environment and food safety."
We keenly monitor consumer materials traded in the domestic market as well as those imported, to help protect consumers from products that do not conform to approved standards," he said.
Ahmed said the DCL has made tremendous efforts in the development of test methods by bringing on board the latest cutting-edge technologies and by interacting with customers and interested parties in the Emirate of Dubai and beyond.
DCL also updates its website constantly with all information on the services provided and the tests that are conducted on various materials and products.
