New rules for jet skis in Dubai

Dubai Maritime City Authority (DMCA) has issued new rules for the use of jet skis across the emirate’s coastline allocating resting areas after the Dubai Executive Council’s Health and Safety Committee approved the same.

Executive Director of Dubai Maritime City Authority Amer Ali said this move is based on a comprehensive study that assessed maritime traffic movement on Dubai’s inshore waters and beaches.

The new rules provide 300-metre buffer zones around three Dubai beaches at Dubai Marina, Umm Suqeim 1 and 2 and Jumeirah 2 and 3 to keep jet skis out of swimming areas. “This is the result of DMCA’s mutual cooperation and ongoing collaboration with Dubai Municipality, Dubai Police and other relevant parties,” Ali said.

A range of safety measures has also been defined for the use of jet skis, which specifies that water sports activities can only be carried out between sunrise and sunset, life jackets must be worn at all times when in waters, and jet ski enthusiasts must respect speed limits, among others.

Ali said that DMCA has set safety-oriented initiatives to ensure a safe maritime sector so that it will support the economic growth of Dubai based on highest standards of excellence.

He also said that allocating certain areas for the use of jet skis is the best strategy to regulate the sector and maintain the highest standards of maritime safety and best international marine practices.

“We look forward to continuing on our path of success in cooperation with our strategic partners from various government authorities and industry-related entities in Dubai, while also maintaining the hard work to set maritime regulations in line with the rapidly evolving developments, in order to consolidate Dubai’s leading position as a first-class international maritime hub,” he added.
