Mona Al Mansoori, Director of the Scholarship and Cultural Foreign Relations Department, said the ministry would be responsible for scholarship payments. In addition to accommodation, students would get a monthly stipend during his years of study, she said, adding that decisions on scholarships and the areas of study for which they would be given would be determined by market demands.

The department also organises pre-departure briefings for students.

To avail of scholarships for this year, a UAE national student must attain a 70 per cent aggregate in his GSC. For postgraduate studies, he or she must attain an equivalent average. Employees applying for scholarships should obtain permission from their management.

However, scholarships will be cancelled if a student is guilty of any misconduct in a foreign country or if he or she fails in any qualifying exams for two successive years.

A student who has been awarded a scholarship should not change the subject of study without the ministry’s permission.

The subjects for which scholarships will be given this year include medicine, engineering, environment and astronomy, IT and computer science, management, law and shariah, financial and accounting, media, political science, art and genetics.

The countries will include the United Kingdom, Ireland, Sweden, the United States, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman and Bahrain.
