New Storm Water Drainage for Al Sadr
and Al Bahia Areas

ABU DHABI - The Department of Public Parks in the Abu Dhabi Municipality is executing several development projects in the emirate that will help growth, especially in the housing sector, Abdul Aziz Al Gureishi, Director of the department, has said.

One of the projects is setting up a storm water drainage in Al Sadr and Al Bahia costing Dh104 million. It is likely to be completed by November 2009. The system would serve a total area of 800 hectares.

This project comes in response to the exigencies of Al Sadr and Al Bahia areas where the existing drainage is not able to serve the purpose since these areas bear the effects of high tides in sea. Besides, rainwater causes soil erosion which damages main and internal roads.

These factors have an adverse effect on the investments in the construction sector in these areas. Al Gureishi said. By solving the drainage problem, more residential units would come up, thus mitigating the shortage of housing units in the emirate.

The municipality has started planting saplings on the sides of roads leading to the Abu Dhabi Golf Club to beautify the area, he said. The project is estimated to cost Dh20 million. An irrigation system required to maintain this greenery will be set up in an area of 48,000 square metres near the club.
