The Waste Management Department of the Dubai Municipality launched a new manual, to source segregation of waste in shopping centres, at a Dubai Chamber conference on waste last week.
Source segregation of waste is intended to boost the amount of recyclable waste generated in commercial centres. The manual was developed to assist shopping centre managements’ start up individual programmes.
“Commercial centres should start implementing the programme now that the manual is launched and we will be working closely with them to ensure that the initiative is carried out efficiently,” said Waste Management Department technical support and studies head Ali Mohammed Al Hammadi.
The launch of the new manual came as a conclusion to the ‘Be Responsible - Rethink Waste Campaign’ launched by the Dubai Chamber Sustainability Network. The initiative was a call to businesses and the public for action to reduce, reuse, and recycle.
Commercial Services Sector of Dubai Chamber senior director Atiq Juma Nasib said: “Raising awareness about the importance of recycling and reducing waste is vital if we want to protect the world and its precious resources for future generations.”
“It also makes good business sense, which is why Dubai Chamber has organised the ‘Be Responsible-Rethink Waste Campaign’ in partnership with the Dubai Municipality and members of our Sustainability Network,” he said.
The month-long campaign aimed at increasing business and public awareness by promoting actions that demonstrated waste reduction and resource efficiency.
The Sustainability Network members behind the campaign included prominent business houses like Nokia, PepsiCo and HSBC.
The Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry launched the Centre for Responsible Business in 2004 to support and promote corporate social responsibility, sustainability, and corporate governance good practices.
