For Dh10, people can now ride smart bikes - basically cycle rickshaws - that have started to ply on Bay Avenue in Business Bay, Dubai. 'Smart Bikes UAE' were launched last week. Nine of these bikes ply in the Bay Avenue area. Each smart bike has a driver, and a seating capacity of two. People can get around the Business Bay area, either as passengers or cyclists, with bikes available for hire at kiosks at three locations: Business Bay Metro Station, Bay Square and Bay Avenue. Mohamed bin Essa, executive director, retail and commercial properties, Dubai Properties, said, "The soft launch of this unique concept is already proving to be very popular among the cummnity of Businees Bay." The bikes are developed in Germany - to create a wide network of short distance transportation. Mohammad Noureddine, senior marketing manager at Smart Bike UAE, said: "This new service will definitely be a great alternative to the daily commuters on their way to or from the Metro, as well as all the visitors to the outdoor retail areas and promenades." Dima Nahas, a resident of Business Bay, sat in one with her children Nadim and Najila for the first time on Monday. She never saw them before she went for her vacation in December. "But now they're frequently sighted." nivriti@khaleejtimes.com
