Abu Dhabi landmarks lit up with the New Zealand flag on Friday evening in a show of solidarity against the terror attack at two mosques that claimed 50 lives. The country's ambassador to the UAE, Matthew Hawkins, tweeted images that showed buildings - including the Adnoc Headquarters and the Marina Mall - sporting the flag. Hawkins thanked the UAE for the "special tribute".
"Last night, I joined the NZ team for the opening ceremony of the Special Olympics. The powerful message from our UAE hosts was one of inclusion and tolerance. The UAE hosts 200 nationalities including thousands of NZers. Then I woke this morning to awful news from Christchurch.

"Today I received many messages of condolences from senior members of the UAE government, officials, colleagues and friends. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers for the victims of Christchurch and for our country. And thank you UAE for this special tribute tonight," the ambassador tweeted.
On Saturday, Hawkins tweeted that it was a "difficult time" for the Kiwis. "So how can you help Christchurch? 1. check here for info like PM updates to help make sense of things 2. Stay in touch with other kiwis, share whats going on 3. join in a virtual tribute by donating to victims," he tweeted, posting a link where people can donate."
