Dubai — Security officials in Dubai have denied allegations of a camera being hidden in the room of a hotel in the city.

Lt.-General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Deputy Chairman of Dubai Police and Public Security, confirmed there are no surveillance cameras in the hotel rooms as has been shown in a video being circulated during the past few days.

A Saudi national had claimed that he found a camera behind the television in his room. Lt.-General Dahi Khalfan said the person was unaware of the latest technology and that the UAE is in the forefront in respecting people’s rights and privacy. He said what the hotel guest saw was a modern receiver for the TV.

He called up on the general public to contact the officials concerned to check on matters and to refrain from spreading baseless rumours to avoid legal action.

A representative from the Radisson Blu Hotel told Khaleej Times that the device was sensor used in changing channels. He said it was installed by a company called Swisscom and was placed in all rooms in all branches of the hotel across the world.

The representative also said that the guest had been identified and the hotel would consider taking legal action.
