Tadweer, the Centre of Waste Management in Abu Dhabi, has launched a new awareness campaign for waste segregation and recycling in the form of an app game, which is free to download from Tadweer's app.
Aimed at educating the community on how to segregate waste - what should go in the green bin for recycling and what should go in the black bin for general waste - the game is very simple (see box).
However, one resident was not impressed with the game. "I think it's a great idea and the most effective way of having an awareness campaign using an interactive game, but I just tried it and I wasn't very impressed," said Martin Pelin, a German resident in Abu Dhabi. "The game is too repetitive and while it teaches about the items that can be recycled here, it doesn't emphasise why it is important to recycle and what happens if we don't."
For years now, Tadweer has been running campaigns to convince residents in the emirate to reduce waste, mostly by recycling. Presently, 1.78kg waste is generated per person daily, but estimates show that Abu Dhabi's population will double by 2040 to over five million people, which means increasing the amounts of waste.
According to a Tadweer representative, in these next 24 years the amount of waste will double as well to reach 24 million tonnes.
