Malayalis living outside Kerala no more need to wait to watch new films released in their home state or go for pirated version.
Reelmonk.com, the platform developed by a group of film crazy youths allows Malayalis to watch the latest movies online legally from their homes by paying a nominal fee. The site, promoted by Konglo Ventures, will initially bring Malayalam movies to the users' home the same day they are released.
The site will be launched today with 15 movies, including Nee-Na by All Jose and Njan Steve Lopez by Rajeev Ravi. The viewers can download the film on their computer and watch it. Prices start from Rs180 per movie for standard quality. High resolution version will cost Rs300.
Once downloaded, the user can see the film any number of times. However, he will not be able to transfer the film to others as it will be locked by a reelmonk player.
Reelmonk.com is the brainchild of three 22-year-olds from Cochin - Blaise Crowly, Vivek Paul and Gautham Vyas. Blaise, who is the CEO of reelmonk.com, says the site will be an effective tool to check the widespread piracy experienced by the film industry now.
"Piracy happens due to non-availability of content. When content is easy to access at a reasonable price we believe piracy will take a back seat," he said, adding that it will offer a rare opportunity to film producers to promote their movies across the world. They can also see how their movies are performing on a daily basis on a transparent dashboard.
"Lot of effort and sacrifice goes into creating a movie and it is shattering when elements such as piracy, lack of releasing platforms and other issues destroy this work. We want to be a platform where all movies can reach viewers with the click of a button," Vivek Paul said.
"During my European tour, I met many Malayalis who complained about their inability to watch new Malayalam movies as and when it was released in India. They also shared that they were forced to watch pirated versions as they had no option to watch them legally," said Lal Jose, the noted director who is releasing Nee-na through reelmonk.com in US, Saudi Arabia and other select countries.
Noted film director Jayaraj said that the venture will also promote Malayalam cinema among the global community of film lovers. He said there was huge interest about Malayalam films in the global stage as it is rich in diversity and content.
