Obesity Weighs on People’s Minds

DUBAI — The UAE has a big fat problem — obesity. A sedentary lifestyle and an over-dependence on junk food are cited as the major causes of rising levels of childhood obesity in the country.

The Unicef judges that several societies have deep-rooted misconceptions about weight gain in children. Hence children are either overfed or are generously allowed to gobble up junk food and fizzy drinks. Lack of physical activity makes the condition worse.

Since healthy habits start at home, health officials have asked parents to play an active role and shed traditional beliefs that a fat child is a healthy child. Officials are also urging parents to ‘get involved’ in their child’s diet and choice of activity to beat the fat.
