Only 11 of 52 bakeries in capital pass hygiene tests

ABU DHABI — Only 11 out of 51 bakeries inspected in the capital by the Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) were found observing hygiene standards.

The food Authority, which has stepped up its campaign against bakeries for ignoring health and safety standards, served 93 warnings on Tuesday. It also found two instances of violations of not following the rules of business, when its inspectors made surprise raids at 51 bakeries across the capital.

“Only 11 bakeries were found observing hygiene requirements,” Mohammed Jalal Al Rayaysa, manager of public relations and communications at the ADFCA told Khaleej Times.

As many as 26 food inspectors took part in the Authority’s raids in an effort to ensure readiness of food outlets to meet consumer expectations during the upcoming holy month of Ramadan, when demand for sweats and confectioneries skyrocket.

“The ADFCA’s prime goal is to promote the culture of food safety among both outlets and consumers,” he said.

“Our main interest lies with compliance with ‘standards’ for achieving economic benefits rather than imposition of penalties on offenders,” he remarked. — adel@khaleejtimes.com
